Sacsayhuaman
Inca Fortress Ruins - Cusco, Peru
Pictures and visitor information from a
trip to the Sacsayhuaman Inca Fortress Ruins located in Cusco City, Peru.
The
Sacsayhuaman Inca fortress ruins sits on a hill overlooking Cusco City
in the southeastern part of Peru. It also known as Sacsahuaman or Saksaq Waman and was built by the Killke people who were superseded by the Incans. Sacsayhuaman was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983. One of the best parts about visiting the Sacsayhuaman fortress ruins is seeing the excellent view of Cuzco city down below. The ruins sit about 3700 meters or 12,000 feet above the city. It's believed that the blocks, some weighing 300 tons and standing at 8.5 meters high, were arranged in the shape of a puma's head with the city of Cuzco being the animal's body. |
