This automotive "how-to" guide was specifically written to assist owners of the 2007 to 2012 Nissan Versa hatchback or sedan in changing the motor oil and replacing the filter in the 1.8L MR18DE inline four cylinder engine.

Owners of other vehicles equipped with the Nissan MR18DE engine such as the Cube, Livina Geniss, Wingroad, Tiida, Latio and Grand Livina may also find these DIY oil change instructions to be helpful.

The items needed to complete this procedure include a floor jack, jack stands, a 14mm socket with ratcheting wrench, a funnel, a used oil catch container, a new oil filter and 4 quarts of new SAE 5W-30 oil.

A few compatible aftermarket oil filters include the following with their part numbers: Purolator L14612, K&N HP-1008, Royal Purple 10-2876, Wix 51358, ACDelco PF1237, Motorcraft FL816, Pentius PLB6607, and Hasting CF113.

14mm Oil Drain Bolt
The first step is to warm up the engine for a few minutes to help suspend any contaminants within the old oil and also help it flow out more quickly when you remove the drain bolt.

It's also a good idea to twist off the oil filler cap by turning it counter clockwise. Removing the cap will help prevent a vacuum from forming and allow the old oil to drain out quickly.

Then chock the rear wheels and engage the emergency / parking brake to prevent the vehicle from moving.

Raise the front passenger side of the vehicle with the floor jack and securely support it with at least two jack stands.

Tighten Oil Drain Bolt
Slide underneath the vehicle and locate the black metal oil pan with the oil drain bolt facing towards the rear of the vehicle.

Place the used oil catch container below the oil drain bolt and remove the bolt with the 14mm socket and ratcheting wrench by turning it counter clockwise.

Allow the old oil to drain out for at least a few minutes until the flow slows down to just a drip.

Insert the oil drain bolt back into the oil pan and tighten it just past hand tight or about 22-29 ft lbs (29-39 Nm) of torque.

While the oil is draining from the oil filter receptacle, dip your pinky finger in some new 5W-30 oil and lubricate the rubber o-ring on the new oil filter.

Lubricating the rubber o-ring on the new oil filter will allow it to form a better seal and make it easier to remove during the next oil change.

Twist on the new oil filter in the clockwise direction and tighten to about 1/4 to 1/2 turn past hand tight. Do not use an oil filter wrench or over tighten the filter which may damage it and cause leaks.

Pour In New 5W-30 Oil
Double check that the oil filter and the oil drain bolt are tight before moving on to the next steps.

Lower the vehicle from the jack stands and the floor jack.

Insert the automotive funnel into the oil filler hole and pour in 3 quarts of the engine's 3 3/8 quart total oil capacity when performing an oil change with filter replacement.

Temporarily replace the oil filler cap, run the engine for a few minutes, turn it off, let the engine sit for a few minutes, and then check the oil level on the yellow handled dipstick.

Pour in a small amount of the 4th bottle of oil and repeatedly check the level on the dipstick until it reaches to just below the upper hole. You may not need to use the entire 3 and 3/8 quarts of oil depending on how long you allowed the old oil to drain out.

If you haven't already, replace the dipstick and twist on the oil filler cap.

Be sure to check the oil level on the dipstick several times over the next week and watch your driveway for oil spots that may indicate a leak from the oil drain bolt or filter. Record the mileage and oil change details in your service record book.
