This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the eighth generation (2016, 2017, 2018 and perhaps also the 2019 and 2020 model years) Nissan Maxima sports sedan in cleaning or changing the air conditioning system's cabin air filter element in the HVAC blower motor housing.

Owners of other Nissan or Infiniti vehicles such as the Versa, Altima, Juke, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Murano, Xterra, Pathfinder, Sentra, Cube, Armada, Leaf, Quest, Frontier, 370Z, GT-R, Titan, Kicks, NV, NV200, G25, G37, M35 and M37 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A few compatible replacement A/C cabin air filters with their part number are as follows: EcoGard XC10020, Fram CF11776, TYC 800177C, PotAuto MAP 1055C, PT Auto Warehouse CF177P, Wix WP10009 and ACDelco CF3353.

No tools are needed to access and replace the filter.

The first two steps are to move to the front passenger footwell and look under the glove box.

Locate the vertically mounted filter access cover on the left side of the footwell.

The HVAC blower motor housing is located at the front of the center stack.

Gently lift up the tab at the bottom of the filter access cover to release the retaining clip.

Swing open the bottom edge of the filter access panel.

You will need to angle the old filter down towards the floor mat to get it past the various obstructions under the glove box.

Inspect Old Filter
When you remove the old filter, make a mental note of any "Air Flow" arrows which should be pointing towards the rear of the vehicle.

The genuine Nissan OEM filter in this 2016 Maxima was part # MicronAir 27277-3JC1A.

Inspect both sides of the old filter.

Clean With Vacuum
Empty Filter Slot
If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out the large debris and remove any fine dust with a vacuum cleaner.

If the old filter is dark grey or black and clogged with dirt, dust, sand, pollen, soot, insects, leaves, twigs, hair and other debris, it should be replaced with a new element.

I recommend buying the EcoGard XC10020 cabin air filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon.

Check for any leaves or other debris inside the filter slot.

If your wet/dry shop vacuum has a crevice attachment, use it to clean out any debris in the filter housing.

Compress New Filter
Slide In New Filter
Orientate the new filter with the "Air Flow" arrow (if present) with the arrow pointing back towards the rear of the car.

Carefully bunch together the new filter and insert it into the slot.

You will need to insert the new filter while holding it at a slight angle to clear the obstructions below the glove box.

Line Up Filter Cover
Re-Insert Top Tab In Slot
Continue installing the new filter until it is fully seated in the housing.

Line up the filter access cover with the tab on the bottom retaining clip facing out towards the front passenger door.

Re-insert the plastic tab at the top of the filter cover into its slot at the top of the filter slot. (Not pictured.)

Filter Change Complete!
Gently push in the bottom edge of the filter access cover until you hear or feel the retaining clip "click" securely into place.

Double check that the filter cover is secure.

Be sure to record the filter change in your vehicle's service records.

Enjoy the fresh clean air from your A/C system!
