Pointing To PCV Valve
This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the second generation "D40 Series" (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016) Nissan Frontier pickup truck with the VQ40DE 4.0 liter V6 engine in checking or changing the PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve.

Owners of other Nissan or Infiniti vehicles such as the Navara, Versa, Maxima, Juke, Rogue, Altima, Xterra, Pathfinder, Murano, Cube, Armada, Leaf, Quest, Sentra, Teana, 370Z, GT-R, Titan, G25, G37, M35, QX56, QX60 and M37 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A few compatible replacement PCV valves with their part numbers include the following: OES W01331776680OES, Airtex 6P1273 and Standard Motor Products # V436.

The tools needed to access and replace the PCV valve include a pair of needle nose pliers, a deep well 23mm socket with a 1/2" drive ratchet (optional) or an adjustable wrench.

The PCV valve is located on the left (passenger side) rear corner of the VQ40DE 4.0 liter V6 engine, as seen when standing in front of the truck.

At the top of the page in the third picture, I'm using a red handled screwdriver to point at the PCV valve location.

Use a pair of needle nose pliers or regular pliers to squeeze together the metal tab and loop on the hose clamp that secures the rubber hose to the green plastic nipple on the PCV valve.

Slide the metal hose clamp back and off the PCV valve.

Green & Black Valve
Pull the rubber hose straight off the green plastic nipple on the PCV valve.

To loosen the old PCV valve, you'll need to use either a pair of pliers or a deep well 23mm socket.

I was able to use a deep well 24mm socket.

Old PCV Valve Removed
Loosen the old PCV valve by turning it counterclockwise.

Once the valve is loose, detach the socket and spin it out the rest of the way by hand.

New PCV Valve
Test the old PCV valve by shaking it vigorously.

If the old PCV valve makes a rattling sound, it should still be good.

If you plan on re-using the old valve, clean it out with some spray cleaner such as carburetor cleaner, MAF (mass air flow) cleaner or throttle body cleaner.

I recommend buying the OES W01331776680OES replacement PCV valve since it has excellent reviews from owners of Nissan vehicles with the 4.0L V6 engine.

Tighten the PCV valve with the 23mm socket or the pliers to just past hand tight.

Try to avoid over tightening the new PCV valve to prevent from damaging the rubber o-ring gasket or cracking the plastic valve.

Push the rubber hose straight on to the new PCV valve.

Squeeze together the tab and loop on the metal hose clamp before sliding the clamp forward over the PCV valve's green plastic nipple.

Re-attach the rubber hose to the "C" shaped retaining clip on the left side of the engine to secure it in place.

Start the engine and listen for any strange sounds that might indicate a problem such as a loose PCV valve or a disconnected vacuum line.
