This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the third generation (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017) Mitsubishi Outlander Sport in cleaning or changing the engine air filter element for the MIVEC 4B11 DOHC 16V 2.0 liter inline four cylinder motor.

Owners of other Mitsubishi vehicles such as the Lancer, Outlander, Mirage, ASX, RVR, Galant, I-MIEV, Montero, Eclipse, 3000GT, Endeavor, Raider, Diamante, Attrage, Carisma, Colt, Grandis, Magna, Pajero and the Space Star may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

Separate Air Box Halves
The first two steps are to open the hood and then move to the right (driver) side of the engine bay.

The engine air filter housing is located just behind the 12V automotive battery and to the left of the electrical fuse box.

Lift up the right side of the two metal latches to release them. Swing the hinged latches over to the left side of the air box.

Gently pull apart the left and right sides of the air box.

Inspect Both Sides
Slide the old air filter out of the housing.

Inspect both sides of the old filter.

If the old filter is dark grey or black and clogged with dirt, dust, leaves, insects, hair, pollen, soot and other debris, it should be replaced with a new element.

If you have a 2011 or 2012 Outlander Sport, I recommend buying the Fram CA10497 engine air filter since it has great reviews on Amazon.

For owners of the 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 Outlander Sport, the Fram CA10910 filter is the best option.

If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out the large debris and remove any fine dust with a vacuum.

Lower In New Air Filter
Take a moment to examine the air filter and notice that it has three rounded corner and one corner that appears to be almost square.

Orientate the filter so that the "square" corner will be at the top front of the air box.

Slide the new air filter in between the left and right halves of the air box.

Gently push together the two halves of the air box.

Flip the metal latches from the left side of the air box over to the right side of the air box.

Snap the latches in place to secure the two halves of the air box together.

Make sure that the two halves of the air box are flush together with out any part of the new filter visible.

Be sure to record the engine air filter change in your SUV's service records.
