This automotive "how-to" guide was specifically written to assist owners of the 1st generation (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 & 2015) Mazda CX-9 crossover SUV in replacing the battery in the combination switchblade car key and keyless entry remote control fob.

Owners of other Mazda vehicles such as the MAZDA2, MAZDA3, MAZDA6, MX-5 Miata, RX-8, MAZDASPEED3, MAZDA5, Tribute SUV, and CX-7 crossover may also find this guide to be helpful.

A replacement coin cell, button or "watch" battery for the Mazda CX-9 key fob is a 3 volt # CR1620 available from Panasonic, Duracell, Energizer, Maxell, Rayovac, GE and other manufacturers.

The only tool needed to replace the battery in a Mazda CX-9 switchblade style key fob is a small flathead screwdriver.

Remote Control Split
The first step is to open the switchblade car key and place the fob on it's side with the key pointing to the right.

Then take a close look at Picture 2 on this page to see the release button that needs to be pressed in order to separate the two halves of the fob.

Insert the small flathead screwdriver into the side of the key fob and gently press down on the button before pulling the switchblade key section away from the remote control section.

Next pry apart the two halves of the remote control section by inserting the small flathead screwdriver into the notch shown in Picture 5 above.
