The luxurious Mauna Kea Beach Hotel offers public access to the beach but the designated parking lot has a limited number of spaces.

We were initially told that the public parking lot was full but to check back in 15-30 minutes. Luckily, someone left just as we made the u-turn to leave and the guard waved us in.

Now that I've seen the excellent snorkeling and scenic view at Mauna Kea Beach for myself, I would definitely spend at least an hour constantly checking with the guard for a parking spot.
