This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the third generation (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and probably
also the refreshed 2019 and 2020 model years) Kia Sedona minivan in
cleaning or changing the A/C system's cabin air filter element in
the HVAC blower motor housing. Owners of other Kia or Hyundai models such as the Grand Carnival, Sorento, Sportage, Niro, Soul, K900, Stinger, Cadenza, Optima, Rio, Forte, Genesis, Sonata, Ioniq, Santa Fe, Tucson, Elantra and Accent may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. A few compatible replacement cabin air filters with their part numbers are as follows: FRAM CF11819, ACDelco CF177, GKI CF1228, TYC 800193P, ECOGARD XC36179, Premium Guard PC4013, ATP GA-16 and Luber-finer CAF1817P. No tools are needed to access and replace the filter. |

Pull Damper Arm Off Peg |
Glove Box Stops |
1/4 Turn Counterclockwise |
The first two steps
are to open the glove box and remove the contents (owner's manual, service
records, registration, etc). Then move to the outer right side wall of the glove box and locate the black plastic damper arm. Gently pull the bottom of the damper arm off the tan / grey plastic mounting peg that has two prongs on the end of it. Move to the inside of the glove box. Rotate the knobs on the two glove box side stops 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction before pulling them straight out. You may need to slightly raise the glove box when you pull out the side stoppers. |
||
Left Side Stopper |
Lower Glove Box |
Cabin Air Filter Cover |
Repeat the process
to remove the side stop on the other side of the glove box. Set the two plastic and rubber side stops aside in a safe place. Gently lower the glove box down towards the floor mat. Once the glove box is out of the way, you'll be able to see the rectangular shaped black plastic cabin air filter access cover. |
||
Right Side - Two Tabs |
Pinch Together Two Tabs |
Swing Open Right Side |
Locate the two
small tabs on the right side of the filter access panel. Gently squeeze together the two tabs to release the retaining clip. Swing open the right side of the filter cover. |
||
Left Side - Tab & Slot |
Old Air Filter Exposed |
Slide Out Old Air Filter |
Pull the large
plastic tab on the left side of the filter cover out of its slot. Set the filter cover aside in a safe place. Slide the old filter straight out of the slot in the HVAC blower motor housing. |
||
|
||
Inspect Both Sides |
Clean With Vacuum |
Down "Air Flow" Arrow |
Inspect both sides
of the old cabin air filter. If the old filter is dark grey or black and clogged with dirt, dust, sand, pollen, soot, insects, leaves, twigs, hair and other debris, it should be replaced with a new element. I recommend buying the FRAM CF11819 "Fresh Breeze" cabin air filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon. It also has baking soda and activated carbon to help absorb odors before they enter the passenger cabin. If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out the large debris and remove any fine dust or sand with a vacuum cleaner. (The OEM filter was marked as Hyundai / Kia part number 97133-A9000.) |
||
Empty Filter Slot |
Slide In New Filter |
New Filter Installed |
Locate the "Air
Flow" arrow on the new filter. The new filter should be orientated with the "Air Flow" arrow pointing down towards the floor mat. Gently slide the new filter straight into the slot in the HVAC blower motor housing. |
||
Re-Insert Large Tab In Slot |
Left Side - Tab Inserted |
Push On Right Side |
Line up the filter
access cover with the opening in the blower motor housing. Re-insert the large plastic tab on the left side into its slot. Then swing the right side closed and push on it to secure the retaining clip. |
||
Filter Cover Secured |
Raise Glove Box |
Pop On Damper Arm |
Double check that
the filter cover is secure. Raise the glove box towards the dashboard. Move to the right outer side wall off the glove box. Push the opening at the bottom of the glove box damper arm on to the two pronged mounting peg. |
||
Re-Insert Side Stoppers |
1/4 Turn Clockwise - Lock |
Close Glove Box - Done! |
Slightly raise the
glove box up towards the dashboard. Re-insert the two plastic and rubber side stoppers into the side walls of the glove box. Rotate the side stops 1/4 turn clockwise to secure them in place. Replace the contents of the glove box and close it to complete the job. Enjoy the fresh clean air from your A/C system! For more,
