This
automotive "how-to" guide was specifically written to assist owners
of the 2nd generation 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 & 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV equipped
with the 2.4 liter Theta II inline four cylinder engine in changing
the motor oil and oil filter. Owners of other Hyundai or Kia vehicles with the 2.4L Theta or Theta II engines such as the Sonata, Tucson, Optima, Rondo, Cadenza, Sportage, Sorento, and Forte may also find this guide to be helpful. To complete this oil change you'll need the following items: 5 quarts (4.6L) of new SAE 5W-20 oil, a new oil filter, an automotive funnel, a floor jack, jack stands, a used oil catch container, an oil filter wrench and a 17mm socket or wrench. A few compatible replacement oil filters with their part numbers are as follows: Bosch 3312, Mobil1 M1-104, K&N PS-1004, Motorcraft FL810, Driveworks DW-4459, Purolator L14459, PureONE PL14459, and Fram PH9688. |

17mm Oil Drain Bolt |
Oil Filter |
Used Oil Catch Container |
The first step is
to turn on the engine and allow it to warm up for a few minutes.
This will help suspend any contaminants inside the engine within the old motor oil, allow the old oil to drain out faster, and make it easier to spin off the old oil filter. Then raise the front passenger side of the vehicle with a floor jack and support it with two jack stands. Slide under the vehicle with a used oil catch container and a 17mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet. |

Remove Oil Drain Bolt |
Twist Off Counter Clockwise |
Remove Oil Filler Cap |
Move the used oil
catch container to below the oil pan and remove the oil drain bolt by
turning it counter clockwise with a 17mm socket or wrench.
Allow the old oil to drain out for at least a few minutes. To help the oil drain out faster, remove the oil filler cap located on the top left of the engine by turning it counter clockwise. Once the old oil has stopped draining out, re-insert the drain bolt and tighten it to just past hand tight or about 20-25 ft lbs of torque if you have a torque wrench. Do not over tighten the oil drain bolt or you risk damaging the threads or the oil pan, which may cause a leak. Slide the used oil catch container forward to underneath the old oil filter and spin it off counter clockwise. If the engine was warmed up enough, it should be easy to turn by hand. If not, use a Lisle 63600 oil filter wrench to remove the old oil filter. I recommend buying the Mobil1 M1-104 oil filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon. |

Coat Finger With Oil |
Lubricate Oil Filter O-Ring |
Tighten 17mm Drain Bolt |
Dip your pinky
finger into some new motor oil and run it around the rubber o-ring on the
new oil filter to lubricate it.
This will allow the new oil filter to form a better seal with the engine to prevent leaks and also make it easier to remove the filter during the next oil change. Twist on the new oil filter in a clockwise direction to just past hand tight. Double check that the oil drain bolt and the new oil filter are both on tight before lowering the car from the jack stands. |
||
Twist On New Oil Filter |
Insert Automotive Funnel |
Pour In New 5W-20 Oil |
Insert the
automotive funnel into the oil filler hole and pour in about 4 quarts of the
engine's 4.86 quart total capacity.
Then run the engine for a few minutes, shut it off, and let it rest for a few minutes. |
||
Oil Level Dipstick Handle |
Check Oil Level On Dipstick |
Replace Oil Filler Cap |
Check the engine
oil level on the dipstick and slowly add the last .86 of a quart until the
level reaches the "F" (full) mark indicated by the upper hole in the metal.
You might need to pour in the entire 4.86 U.S. quarts of new SAE 5W-20 oil to reach the maximum level. When the oil level is correct, re-insert the oil filler cap and tighten it by turning it clockwise. Be sure to check the oil level on the dipstick at least a few times over the next week and watch your driveway for oil spots that may indicate a leak from the oil drain bolt or oil filter.
