Tail Light Bulbs Replacement Guide
How to change a burnt out brake, rear
turn signal, reverse and parking light bulb on a 2005-2010 Honda Odyssey.

This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the third generation (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010)
Honda Odyssey minivan in changing a burnt out brake, rear turn
signal, reverse or parking light bulb in the tail light assemblies. Owners of other Honda or Acura vehicles such as the Accord, Civic, Crosstour, CR-V, CR-Z, HR-V, Fit, Element, Insight, Pilot, Ridgeline, Clarity, Crosstour, Elysion, ILX, TSX, TLX, TL, RLX, RDX, NSX and MDX may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The compatible replacement light bulb part numbers are as follows: Brake # 7443, Rear Turn Signal # 7440A (or WY21W), Reverse # 7440 and Parking Light # 194. The tools needed to access and replace the tail light bulbs include a small flathead screwdriver, an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet (or a standard Phillips head screwdriver) and possibly also a plastic trim panel removal tool. |

The first two steps are to open the tailgate and move to the side of the vehicle with the burnt out tail light bulb. Locate the two small square shaped plastic screw covers on the inner edge of the tail light housing that were hidden by the tailgate. Insert the blade of a small flathead screwdriver into the small notch at the bottom of the screw covers before gently prying them out. Set the two screw covers aside in a safe place. |

Loosen the two
bolts by turning them counterclockwise with an 8mm socket and a 1/4" drive
ratchet or a standard Phillips head screwdriver. Set the two bolts aside in a safe place. |

Brake Light Bulb Socket |
The tail light
housing is still held in place to the rear corner of the vehicle by a peg
inserted into a grommet and a plastic spike inserted into a slot. Gently pry along the front outer edge of the tail light housing with a plastic trim panel removal tool to loosen the other fasteners. Pull the tail light housing straight off the rear corner of the minivan. Turn over the assembly to access the two bulb sockets. The brake light bulb socket is located at the top of the housing. |

Empty Bulb Housing |
Rotate the base of
the brake light bulb socket 1/4 turn counterclockwise before pulling it
straight out of the housing. Pull the old light bulb straight out of the socket. |

Push In New Light Bulb |
1/4 Turn Clockwise - Lock |
Push a new dual
filament number
7443 (also known as the
W21/5W) light bulb straight into the socket. Re-insert the bulb socket into the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn clockwise to secure it in place. |

Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
The rear turn
signal light bulb socket is located at the bottom of the housing. Rotate the bulb socket 1/4 turn counterclockwise before pulling it straight out. Pull the old light bulb straight out of the socket. |

Line Up Peg & Grommet |
Push a new amber
colored number
7440A (also known as the
WY21W) light bulb straight
into the socket. Re-insert the turn signal bulb socket into the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn clockwise to secure it in place. Hold the tail light housing near the rear corner of the car. Line up the plastic peg with its grommet and the black plastic spike with its slot. |

Push On Tail Light Housing |
Tighten Clockwise |
Slide the tail
light assembly back into place until it is flush with the rear corner of the
minivan. Replace the two bolts by turning them clockwise with a Phillips head screwdriver until they are snug. |

Pop In Second Cover |
Try to avoid over
tightening the two bolts to prevent from cracking the plastic inner edge of
the tail light housing. Line up the two plastic screw covers and gently snap them back into place. |

Test New Tail Light Bulbs |
Parking & Reverse Lights |
Test the new tail
light bulbs by having an assistant step on the brake pedal and activate the
hazard signals. The reverse and parking light bulbs are located in a separate housing attached to the tailgate door. |

Plastic Access Panel |

Access Cover Removed |
Locate the
rectangular shaped access cover on the underside of the tailgate door. Use the plastic pry bar tool or a flathead screwdriver to gently pull off the access panel. Set the access cover aside in a safe place. |

Two Light Bulb Sockets |
1/4 Turn Counterclockwise |
Pull Out Old Light Bulb |
The parking light
bulb socket is located at the top of the housing. Rotate the small grey plastic bulb socket 1/4 turn counterclockwise before pulling it straight out of the housing. Pull the old light bulb straight out of the socket. |

1/4 Turn Clockwise - Lock |
Push a new number
194 miniature wedge base
light bulb straight into the socket. If you would like to have brighter parking lights, install some compatible 194 LED bulbs. Re-insert the bulb socket into the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn clockwise to secure it in place. |

Reverse Light Bulb Socket |

The larger reverse
light bulb socket is located at the bottom of the housing. Rotate the bulb socket 1/4 turn counterclockwise before pulling it straight out of the housing. Pull the old reverse light bulb straight out of the socket. |

Line Up Access Cover |
Push a new number
7440 light bulb straight
into the socket. Re-insert the reverse light bulb socket into the housing and rotate it 1/4 turn clockwise to secure it in place. Line up the plastic access cover with the underside of the tailgate. |

Test New Tail Light Bulbs |
Gently pop the
access cover back into place. To test the new tail light bulbs, have an assistant sit in the front seat, step on the brake pedal, activate the hazard signals, turn on the headlights to illuminate the parking lights and place the transmission in reverse.
