This computer "how-to" guide was specifically written to assist owners of the HP Pavilion dv2000, dv2500 or dv2700 series of notebook computers in replacing the hard disk drive or the RAM memory modules.

The specific model number of this HP computer is dv2745se. Owners of other similar HP laptops such as the dv6500, dv9500, dv2600, dv2800, dv2718, dv2736, and dv2742 may also find this guide to be helpful.

This dv2745se laptop came equipped with a Seagate 250GB 5400 RPM hard drive and two 1 GB sticks of Samsung RAM memory (total of 2GB). I purchased a larger and faster 500 GB 7200 RPM hard drive and two 2 GB memory modules for a new total of 4 GB of RAM.

The only tools needed to complete this procedure are a small flathead screwdriver and a small Phillips head screwdriver.

Be sure to discharge your static electricity by touching metal or put on an anti-static wrist strap before continuing.

Unscrew Hard Drive Cover
The first step is to turn over the laptop and lay down on something soft like an old t-shirt to prevent scratching the top lid.

Then locate the battery release switch and slide it to the left towards the edge of the laptop until the battery pops up.

Remove the battery and set it aside in a safe place.

The hard drive sits under a rectangular black plastic cover near the headphone and microphone plugs.

Loosen the two small Phillips head screws on the hard drive cover and gently lift it off.

The screws will stay attached to the cover.

Gently Lift Out HDD
The old hard drive is mounted inside a metal adapter tray that needs to be lifted out.

Use the piece of metal tape on the edge of the hard drive to lift it out of the bay or gently pry out the drive with a flathead screwdriver.

Remove the two Phillips head screws on each side of the metal hard drive tray and then pull the hard drive away from the SATA adapter built into one end of the tray.

Reverse the steps to install your new faster / larger hard drive.

RAM Module Pops Up
Each RAM memory module is held in place by two plastic and metal retaining clips.

Release the sticks of RAM by gently pushing the retaining arms outwards with a small flathead screwdriver.

Be sure to not scratch or scrape the old RAM modules or any other sensitive exposed electronics.

Once each retaining clip is released, the RAM modules will spring upwards and can be easily pulled out at an angle.

Take note of how the old RAM modules were installed and insert the new RAM in the same manner.

Then gently push down the new RAM chips until the retaining clips snap into place on their sides.

Double check that the new RAM and hard drive are securely in place before continuing.

Re-insert the battery and push down until it is flush with the rest of the laptop.

Turn on the computer and begin installing your operating system of choice.

If the laptop won't turn on, double check that the hard drive is connected properly and try re-seating the RAM modules.
