This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the revised first generation (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 & 2011) GM Chevrolet Aveo in cleaning or changing the engine air filter element for the Ecotec 1.6 liter inline four cylinder motor.

Owners of other General Motors vehicles such as the Buick Verano, Regal, LaCrosse, Cascada, Encore, Enclave, Envision, GMC Canyon, Sierra 1500, Terrain, Yukon, Denali, Savana, Spark, Sonic, Cruze, Malibu, Impala, Volt, Camaro, Corvette, SS, Trax, Equinox, Traverse, Tahoe, Suburban, Colorado, Silverado and Express may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A few compatible replacement filters with their part numbers include the following: Fram CA9902, K&N 33-2320, Hastings AF1243, Wix 42831, ACDelco A3081C, Mann-Filter MA 1115, Pentius PAB9902, Purolator A25588 & Beck Arnley 042-1703.

To access and replace the filter, the tools you'll need are a Phillips head screwdriver or an 8mm socket with an extension bar and a 1/4" drive ratchet.

Screw Remains Attached
The first two steps are to open the hood and then move to the left side of the engine bay.

The black plastic engine air box is located on the left side of the engine just behind the passenger side headlight assembly.

To remove the top half of the engine air box, you'll need to loosen the four screws.

You can either use an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratcheting wrench or a Phillips head screwdriver.

There is one screw on the rear edge, another on the front edge and two on the right (driver) side of the air box.

Loosen the screws by turning them counterclockwise. The screws will remain attached to the top half of the air box.

Insert New Air Filter
Inspect both sides of the old air filter.

If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out the large debris and remove any fine dust with a vacuum cleaner.

If the old filter is dark grey or black and clogged with dirt, dust, soot, pollen, insects, leaves, twigs and other debris, it should be replaced with a new element.

I recommend buying the Fram CA9902 engine air filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon.

Due to the shape of the new filter, it can only be inserted in one way.

Lower the new filter in to the bottom half of the air box with the pleats facing down and the cut out sections for the screws on the right side.

Lower the top half of the air box down in to place over the new filter.

Tighten the four screws by turning them clockwise with the Phillips head screwdriver (or an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratcheting wrench).

Try to avoid over tightening the screws to prevent from cracking the plastic air box housing.

Double check that the two halves of the air box are flush together with no part of the new filter visible.
