This
automotive "how-to" guide was specifically written to assist owners
of the second generation (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012) Ford
Escape SUV in cleaning or replacing the air filter element for the
Duratec 25 2.5 liter inline four cylinder engine. Owners of other Ford, Lincoln, Mercury or related Mazda vehicles such as the Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, Taurus, Mustang, Edge, Explorer, C-Max, Expedition, F-150, E-150, E-350 Wagon, Flex, Transit Connect, MKZ, MKX, MKS, MKT, Milan, Grand Marquis, Mariner, Mountaineer, Navigator, and Mazda Tribute may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. A few aftermarket air filter elements include the following with their part numbers: Fram CA8997, Purolator PA35323, Beck Arnley 042-1650, Hastings AFC1354, Pentius PAB8997, Motorcraft FA1696, Mann MA 1016, K&N 33-2187, Fram CA8997, ACDelco A2041C and Ecogard XA5323. No tools are needed to clean or replace the engine air filter. A wet/dry shop vacuum can be helpful for cleaning the air box. |

Two Clasps Released |
Pull Open Air Box |
Slide Out Old Air Filter |
The black plastic
air box is located at the rear right corner of the engine bay, closest to
the driver seat. Access the old air filter element by first releasing the two silver metal clasps on the top of the air box by flipping them upwards. Pull the two halves of the air box apart and slide out the old air filter straight up out of the box. |

Inspect Other Side |
Clean Out Air Box |
Cleaning Old Filter |
|
||
Inspect both side
of the old engine air filter. If the old filter looks relatively clean, tap out the large debris and clean it with a wet/dry vacuum before re-installing it. If the old filter is dark grey or black and clogged with dirt, dust, hair, leaves, insects and other debris, it should be replaced with a new element. I recommend buying the Fram CA8997 engine air filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon. |

Slide In New/Cleaned Filter |
Close Two Halves Box |
|
Clean out both
halves of the air box with the vacuum. Insert the new or cleaned air filter back in to the air box with the pleated side facing to the right (driver's side). Push the two halves of the air box together until they are flush at each edge. |

Secure 2nd Clasp |
Engine Air Filter Replaced |
Swing the metal
hooks over the edge of the air box and snap the clasps closed. Make sure that the two halves of the air box are flush together all the way around and no part of the air filter is visible. For more, please check out my
