1.
Kona Comfort Vacation Rental - "Charming Studio" In Kailua-Kona We chose the "Charming Studio" at the Kona Comfort Vacation Rental as our temporary home during our ten night stay on the Big Island of Hawaii. It was an excellent value with a great location up in a peaceful volcano side suburb of Kailua-Kona. |
2.
Akaka Falls State Park - Honomu, Hamakua Coast, Big Island The beautiful Akaka waterfall is over on the Hilo side of the Big Island. |
3.
Green Sand Beach - South Point Park It was quite a hike to get from the parking lot at South Point Park over to the Green Sand Beach. But well worth it for the dramatic scenery along the way and to see one of only three green sand beaches in the world. |
4.
Anaehoomalu Beach - Snorkeling Pictures - Kohala Coast, Kona Side The snorkeling at A-Bay beach was good but not the best we experienced on the Big Island. A fantastic view and calm waters for swimming were the best attractions at this golden sand beach. |
5.
Coconut Island Park - Hilo Bay One of the attractions we visited while checking out the Hilo side of the Big Island was the small Coconut Island Park. Watch the water as you cross over the foot bridge since green sea turtles are commonly spotted around Coconut Island. |
6.
Hapuna
Beach State Park - Kamuela, Kohala Coast This is another great golden brown sand beach where we spent a morning snorkeling. There are lots of coral formations and a variety of colorful tropical fish in the water directly off the beach. |
7.
Ho'okena Beach Park - Underwater Snorkeling Pictures
Hookena Beach is a beautiful "salt & pepper" sand beach located just south of Captain Cook in the South Kona area. The snorkeling here was excellent with plenty of small colorful fish and some larger species. Sightings of green sea turtles and dolphin pods are known to occur at this beach. |
8.
Honokohau Marina & Small Boat Harbor - Sunset Pictures I had read that the Honokohau Marina was a great place to watch the sunset in the Kailua-Kona area. It was just a few miles from our vacation rental and well worth the visit. |
9.
Holoholokai Beach Park - Kamuela, Kohala Coast The Holoholokai Beach is not a sandy beach where you'd like to go swimming. Instead of sand, the beach is covered with small white and black volcanic rocks. The major attractions at this beach are the scenic view and the eclectic sea life in the tidal pools surrounding the area. |
10.
Hwy 19 Lava Tube & Cave - North of Kailua-Kona Just north of the Kailua-Kona area of the Big Island, there is a lava tube that runs across Highway 19. Part of the lava tube has collapsed on the right (east) side of the road and formed a cave that makes an interesting stop for curious tourists. |
11.
Highway 19 (Queen Kaahumanu) Pictures - Kona Coast We must have spent at least a few hours of our ten day vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii traveling up and down Hwy 19 along the Kona Coast. This stretch of relatively repetitive road was what we took each day to visit the various beaches and other attractions on the Kona side of the Big Island. |
12.
Kahaluu Beach Park, Kailua-Kona Kahalu'u isn't the most attractive beach on the Big Island, but the variety of colorful sea life in the waters and its location close to Kailua-Kona makes it a very popular attraction. |
13.
Kekaha Kai State Park - Manini'owali &
Mahai'ula Beach There are two beautiful beaches located within Kekaha Kai State Park. One is located down a paved road, while the other requires traversing a rough dirt and lava rock road. |
14.
Kona Brewing Co. Brewery Tour - Kailua-Kona One of the highlights of our trip to the Big Island was taking the brewery tour at the Kona Brewing Company brewery located just down the volcano side from our vacation rental in Kailua-Kona.
15.
Manini Beach Snorkeling - Napoopoo Park, Captain Cook, South Kona Some of the best snorkeling that we experienced on the Big Island was at Manini Beach located in Napoopoo Park in the South Kona area. |
16.
Mauna Kea Beach Snorkeling - Kohala Coast, Big Island, Hawaii Another one of the excellent snorkeling trips we experienced on the Big Island was at the Mauna Kea Beach located behind the beautiful Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. It took a bit of patience and persistence to gain access to the public beach access parking lot of this luxury hotel, but it was well worth the effort. |
17.
Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens - Hilo City The Panaewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens is a free attraction located on the "wet" Hilo side of the Big Island. Some of the features of the zoo include tiger feedings, a petting zoo, and a water garden. |

19. Pu'uhonua o Honaunau Place of Refuge - South Kona | |
