New Wiper Blade Refill
This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically created to assist owners of the first generation (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 & 2006) Acura MDX in removing the old rubber insert in the rear wiper blade assembly and installing a new wiper refill.

Owners of other Acura or Honda vehicles such as the RDX, ILX, TLX, RLX, TL, CL, RSX, RL, TSX, ZDX, NSX, Integra, Pilot, Accord, Civic, Fit, Clarity, CR-V, CR-Z, HR-V, Odyssey, Element  and Ridgeline may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The OEM rear wiper blade size is 475mm or about 18.7" (inches) in length.

Two compatible replacement rear wiper blade rubber insert refills with their part numbers are the Trico 45-190 (includes new metal bars) and the OES Genuine W0133-1838477-OES.

(If you would like to replace the entire wiper arm and blade assembly, the OEM part number is Acura 76740-S3V-A04.)

No tools are required to change the rear wiper blade.

A pair of pliers may be useful for pulling out the old rubber insert.

Pull Out Rubber Insert
I bought the Trico 45-190 Narrow rear wiper blade rubber insert refill since it includes the two thin metal bars and had great reviews on Amazon.

The first step is to gently lift the wiper arm off the back windshield window.

Then either use your fingers or a pair of pliers to gently pull on the right (passenger) side of the old rubber wiper blade.

If the old rubber insert doesn't slide out easily, move to the left (driver) side of the wiper blade.

Gently pull the left (driver) side of the rubber insert towards the left and carefully remove it from the metal bracket.

Try to avoid bending the metal bracket on the wiper blade holder.

Continue pulling the rubber piece away from the wiper arm.

Gently pull the old metal bars out of the brackets.

Finish removing the rubber wiper blade insert and the two metal bars from the "[" shaped retaining brackets.

If you purchased a new rubber insert that did not include new metal bars, save the old metal bars for re-installation.

Place a towel on the back windshield to protect the glass from being scratched, chipped, shattered or cracked just in case the rear wiper arm smacks down on to the window.

Sliding Refill to the Right
The Trico blade needs to be orientated in the correct position before installing it.

There are several "C" shaped plastic retaining clips on the Trico 45-190 refill that hold the new metal bars in place to the rubber blade.

Line up the new Trico blade with the side that does not have a retaining clip on the very end of it with the right side of the wiper blade holder.

The other side of the new Trico blade has small metal barbs and a plastic retaining clip at the very end of it. The metal barbs will be used to secure the right end of the wiper insert to the bracket located at the right end of the wiper blade holder.

Pulling Off Plastic Clips
Carefully slide the bare end of the new rubber insert into the [ shaped bracket at the far right (passenger) side of the wiper blade holder.

The thinnest part of the new wiper blade should be pointing towards the window.

Continue sliding the rubber insert into the [ shaped metal wiper blade holder brackets on the wiper assembly.

As you install the new wiper blade insert, you'll see the plastic retaining clips sliding to the right and falling off the right end of the blade.

Pull the final plastic retaining clip off the right (passenger) side end of the new refill.

Look closely and you'll see two small metal barbs on either side of the right end of the new wiper blade.

Gently pull the new wiper blade to the left (driver) side until the first metal barbs are passed the final [ shaped metal bracket.

The final right side black metal wiper blade holding bracket should be situated in between the two silver metal barbs on either side of the wiper blade.

Double check that the new wiper blade insert is securely attached.

Gently lower the rear wiper arm down to the back window.

For the best wiper performance, thoroughly clean off the back window and apply a glass treatment product that will repel water such as Rain-X.

If it seems like the metal spring in the rear wiper arm assembly is weak and the rubber wiper blade doesn't make good contact with the window, consider replacing the entire wiper arm which is part number Acura 76740-S3V-A04.
