Interior Door Panel Removal Guide
How to take off the plastic interior door
panels in an XV70 8th generation 2018 to 2022 Toyota Camry sedan.

This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the XV70
eighth generation (2018, 2019 and probably also the 2020, 2021 & 2022 model
years) Toyota Camry sedan in taking off the plastic interior door panels in
order to upgrade the OEM speaker, fix a faulty electrical switch, add
soundproofing material or replace a broken power window motor. Owners of other Toyota, Scion and Lexus vehicles such as the Avalon, Corolla, Prius, Yaris, Mirai, 86, Sienna, RAV4, Highlander, 4Runner, C-HR, Land Cruiser, Sequoia, Tacoma, Tundra, Venza, Hilux, RX 350, IS 250, IS 350, CT 200H, GS 450h, GX 470, LX 470, UX 200, NX 300 and UX 250h may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. The tools needed to complete this procedure include a plastic trim panel removal tool and a Phillips head screwdriver. To remove the OEM front door speakers, you'll need a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet or a Phillips head screwdriver. |

The first two steps
are to lower the power window all the way down and fully open the door. Move to the top inner corner of the door panel and locate the small triangular shaped sail panel. Use a plastic pry bar tool to gently pry off the sail panel. (On some Toyota models or Camry trim levels, the sail panel may contain a tweeter speaker that will need to have its power plug disconnected.) Set the sail panel aside in a safe place. Then move to the chrome silver colored door opener handle and door lock rocker switch assembly. Use the plastic pry bar tool to gently pry out the trim piece located behind the door opener handle. |

Set the trim cover
aside in a safe place. Then pry up the rear edge of the switch panel with the plastic pry bar tool. Try to avoid using excessive force. The switch panel should pop up relatively easily. |

Disconnect Power Plugs |
Lift out the switch
panel and slide it towards the rear of the car. There is a small plastic hook on the front edge of the switch panel. Try to avoid breaking it. Push in the release tabs on the electrical connectors before sliding the power plugs straight out of their sockets. |

Release Arm Rest Clips |
Set the switch
panel aside in a safe place. Then move to the rear edge of the armrest cover. Gently pry up the rear edge of the armrest with the plastic pry bar tool. Continue releasing the retaining clips along the outer edge of the armrest. |

Disconnect Plastic Tether |
Remove Phillips Screw |
Lift off the
armrest and turn it over. There is a white plastic triangular shaped piece that tethers the armrest to the door panel. Gently remove the anchor from the slot in the door panel. Set the armrest aside in a safe place. Remove the screw located behind the door opener handle by turning it in the counterclockwise direction with a Phillips head screwdriver. |

Set the screw aside
with the plastic trim piece. Remove the screw that was located under the switch panel by turning it in the counterclockwise direction with a Phillips head screwdriver. Set the screw aside with the switch panel. |

Remove Armrest Screw |

Pry Out Step Light |
Remove the screw
that was located under the armrest cover by turning it in the
counterclockwise direction with the Phillips head screwdriver. Set the screw aside with the armrest cover. Move to the bottom of the door panel and locate the courtesy step light housing. Gently pry out the rear edge of the light housing. |

Push in the release
tab on the white plastic power plug before pulling it straight out of its
socket. Set the courtesy step light housing aside in a safe place. Insert the pry bar tool in between the bottom edge of the door panel and the metal door frame. |

Pop Rivet - Top Inner |
Firmly pull out the
bottom edge of the door panel to release the plastic pop rivet friction
fasteners. Continue pulling out the pop rivets all along the bottom and both sides of the door panel. Make sure that the pop rivet at the very top inner corner of the door panel has been released. |

Once all of the pop
rivets have been released, you can carefully lift the plastic door panel up
and off the lip at the top of the metal door frame. Tilt the top edge of the door panel towards yourself and support the bottom edge with your legs. Locate the two metal cables that operate the door opener handle and the door lock rocker switch. |

Lift Up Rear Edge |
Gently pull the
rear edge of the black plastic bracket out of the mount on the back side of
the door panel. Continue pulling out the rear edge of the bracket. |

Metal Door Frame |
Pull the door
opener handle out of the opening in the door panel. Set the plastic door panel aside in a safe place. |

Remove Stuck Pop Rivet |

OEM Door Speaker |
Check the metal
door panel to see if any of the white plastic pop rivets remained attached. Pull out the stuck pop rivets and replace them on the back side of the plastic door panel. The OEM door speaker is located at the bottom inner corner of the door frame. |

Loosen Counterclockwise |

To remove the OEM
door speaker, loosen the four screws in the counterclockwise direction with
a 10mm socket and a 1/4" drive ratchet or a Phillips head screwdriver. The OEM front door speakers can be replaced with aftermarket car speakers in the following sizes: 6 1/2" (6.5") and 6 3/4" (6.75"). |

tab on the white plastic electrical connector before sliding it straight out
of its socket. You may need to gently pry the old speaker off the metal door frame. |

I highly recommend
applying some Dynamat sound
deadener to the metal door frame and to the rear of the plastic door panel
to help stop vibrations and rattles when you crank up the volume.
To replace the plastic door panel, hold it near the metal door frame. Tilt the top edge of the door panel towards yourself. |

Re-insert the door
opener handle through the opening in the plastic door panel. Push down the rear edge of the black plastic bracket into the mount. The bracket should click securely into place. Lower the top of the plastic door panel down on to the lip at the top edge of the metal door frame. |

Plug Wire For Step Light |
Line up the plastic
pop rivets with their corresponding holes in the metal door frame. Push in the pop rivet at the top outer corner and also the pop rivet at the top inner corner. Pull the electrical connector and wire for the courtesy step light out of the opening in the bottom of the door panel. |

Firmly Tap In Pop Rivets |
Pull the two
electrical connectors for the switch panel out of the opening in the middle
of the panel. Firmly tap in the pop rivets all along the bottom and both sides of the door panel. |

Push the power plug
for the courtesy step light into its socket. Re-insert the wires and front edge of the housing back into the door panel. Gently snap in the retaining clip on the rear edge of the housing back into the panel. |

Replace the screw
that was located under the armrest by turning it in the clockwise direction
with the Phillips head screwdriver. Then replace the Phillips head screw that was located under the switch panel by turning it in the clockwise direction. Line up the armrest cover with the door panel. |

Push Down Secure Clips |
Re-insert the
plastic triangle piece into its slot on the door panel. Lower the armrest cover back down into place. Push on the armrest cover to secure the retaining clips. |

Push the two
electrical connectors straight into their sockets on the underside of the
switch panel. The plugs should "click" securely into place. Re-insert the hook at the front edge of the switch panel back into the door panel first. Then lower the rear edge of the switch panel. |

Push down on the
switch panel to secure the retaining clips. Replace the screw behind the door opener handle by turning it in the clockwise direction with the Phillips head screwdriver. Push the plastic trim piece back into place behind the door opener handle. |

Line up the sail
panel at the top inner corner of the door panel. Push the sail panel back into place to secure the pop rivet friction fastener. (If the sail panel contains a tweeter speaker, be sure to replace the electrical connector.) Sit inside the car, close the door and verify that the door opener handle, door lock rocker switch, power window switch, power door lock switch and speaker all work properly.
