cabin air filter element in a 4th generation 2017 to 2022 Kia Sportage.

This automotive
maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the fourth
generation (2017, 2018, 2019 and possibly also the refreshed 2020, 2021 and
2022) Kia Sportage SUV in cleaning or changing the air conditioning system's
cabin air filter element located in the HVAC blower motor housing. Owners of other Kia, Hyundai and Genesis vehicles such as the Niro, Optima, Soul, Forte, Rio, Stinger, Cadenza, K900, Sorento, Telluride, Sedona, Kona, Santa Fe, Tucson, Elantra, Sonata, Accent, Veloster, Ioniq, Nexo, Palisade, G70, G80 and G90 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. A few compatible replacement filters with their part numbers include the following: EcoGard XC10490, TYC 800205P, Bosch 6036C, Premium Guard PC99155 and Wix 24684. No tools are needed to access and replace the cabin air filter. The first few steps are to sit in the front passenger seat, open the glove box and empty out the contents. |

1/4 Turn Counterclockwise |
Remove Side Stopper |
Left Side Wall Stop |
Locate the two
round black plastic side stops or "stoppers" on the left and right side
walls of the glove box. Lift the glove box an inch or two so that the tension on the side stops is released. Grasp the knob in the center of the side stop and rotate it 1/4 turn in the counterclockwise direction. Pull the side stop straight out of the glove box. |

Glove Box Damper Arm |
Repeat the process
to remove the other side stop. Set the two side stops aside in a safe place. Then move to the right outside edge of the glove box and locate the dampening arm. |

Lower Glove Box |
Gently pull the
damper arm off its mounting peg with two prongs. Carefully lower the glove box down to the floor mat. |

Cabin Filter Access Cover |
Two Tabs - Left Side |
Pinch Together Tabs |
Once the glove box
is out of the way, you'll be able to see the rectangular filter access cover
and the HVAC blower motor housing. There are two tabs on the left side of the filter cover. Pinch the two tabs together before pulling the left side of the cover away from the filter housing. |
||
Pull Open Left Side |
Tab & Slot - Right Side |
Old Filter Exposed |
Swing open the left
side of the cover and then pull the tab on the right side out of its slot. Set the filter cover aside in a safe place. Once the cover has been removed, you'll be able to see the white outer edge of the old filter. |
||
|
||
Pull Out Old Air Filter |
Inspect Both Sides |
Clean With Vacuum |
Slide the old
filter straight out of the slot. Inspect both sides of the old filter. If the old filter is dark grey or black and clogged with dust, dirt, pollen, soot, insects, twigs, hair, leaves, sand and other debris, it should be replaced with a new element. I recommend buying the EcoGard XC10490 cabin air filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon. If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out the large debris and remove any fine dust with a vacuum cleaner. |
||
Empty Filter Slot |
Slide In New Air Filter |
New Filter Installed |
Check the inside of
the filter slot for any large debris such as leaves or twigs.
Use a wet/dry shop vacuum with a crevice attachment to clean out any debris in the slot. Orientate the new filter with the "Air Flow" arrow pointing in the correct direction. The air flow arrow should be pointing down towards the floor mat. Make sure the new filter is fully seated in the slot. |
||
Line Up Tab & Slot - Right |
Swing Left Side Closed |
Push To Secure Clip |
Line up the filter
cover with the slot. Re-insert the tab on the right side of the filter cover into its corresponding slot on the housing. Swing the left side of the cover closed towards the filter. Gently push on the left side of the cover to secure the retaining clip. You should hear or feel the retaining clip "click" securely into place. |
||

Raise Glove Box |
Pop On Damper Arm |
Raise the glove box
towards the dashboard. Move to the right outer side of the glove box. Push the damper arm back over the two prongs on its mounting peg. |
||
Right Side Stop |
1/4 Turn Clockwise - Lock |
Re-Insert Left Side Stop |
Raise the glove box
until the holes in the side walls are clear of the dashboard. Re-insert the two stops and rotate them 1/4 turn in the clockwise direction to secure them into place. |
