How to change the windshield window wiper
blades on a 3rd generation 2014 to 2018 Toyota Highlander SUV.
2017 Highlander Windshield |
Raise Wiper Arm Off Window |
This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the third generation (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and
probably also the 2019 and 2020 model years) Toyota Highlander SUV
in changing the front windshield window wiper blades. Owners of other Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles such as the 4Runner, Avalon, 86, C-HR, Camry, Corolla, iM, Land Cruiser, Mirai, Prius, RAV4, Sequoia, Sienna, Tacoma, Tundra, Yaris, FR-S, xB, xD, tC, xA, CT 200h, ES 250, ES 300, ES 330, ES 350, IS 250, IS 350, RX 300, GS 250, NX 300 and RX 350. The OEM wiper blade sizes in inches are as follows: Driver Side 26" and Passenger Side 20". A few compatible replacement wiper blades with their part numbers are as follows: Bosch ICON 26A & Bosch ICON 20B, Aero 26" & 20", Rain-X RX30226 & Rain-X RX30220 and Michelin 8026 & Michelin 8020. The only tool needed to remove the old wiper blades from the wiper arm and install the new ones is a flat head screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool. |
|
|
|
Insert Flat Head Screwdriver |
Pry Open Locking Tab |
The first step is to lift the windshield wiper
arm off the window until it remains in the raised position by itself. Locate the black plastic lock tab at the center of the wiper blade near the end of the metal wiper arm. Insert the blade of a small flathead screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool in between the bottom edge of the lock tab. Gently pry up the locking tab to release the old wiper blade. |
|
Swing Up Lock Tab |
Slide Down Wiper Blade |
Swing the hinged lock tab up and away from the
metal wiper arm. Firmly push the old wiper blade down to slide the mounting bracket out of the metal hook at the end of the wiper arm. |
|
Rotate Perpendicular |
Lift Blade Off Metal Hook |
Rotate the old wiper blade until it is
perpendicular (at a 90 degree angle) to the metal wiper arm. Pull the old wiper blade off the end of the wiper arm. |
|
|
|
Towel - Protect Glass |
Opening In New Wiper Blade |
Place a large towel down on the windshield to
protect the glass from being shattered, cracked, chipped or scratched just
in case the metal wiper arm smacks down on to the window while you are
replacing the wiper blade. I recommend buying the Bosch ICON 26A 26" wiper blade and the Bosch ICON 20B 20" wiper blade since they have excellent reviews on Amazon. Flip open the locking tab at the center of the new wiper blade. Line up the new wiper blade with the metal hook at the end of the wiper arm. The rubber blade should be pointing out away from the SUV. |
|
Pass Hook Through Middle |
Rotate Blade Parallel To Arm |
Insert the hook at the end of the wiper arm into
the opening in the center of the new wiper blade. Rotate the new wiper blade until it is just about parallel with the wiper arm. |
|
Pull Blade Up Into Hook |
Swing Closed Locking Tab |
Firmly pull the new wiper blade up to slide the
mounting bracket into the metal hook at the end of the wiper arm. You should hear or feel the mounting bracket "click" securely into the metal hook at the end of the wiper arm. Swing down the plastic locking tab. Firmly push on the lock tab until it clicks securely into place. |
|
Lower Arm To Window |
Wiper Blades Replaced |
Gently lower the
wiper arm and the new wiper blade back down to the windshield. For the best wiper performance, I highly recommend cleaning off the windshield and applying a window treatment product that will repel water such as Rain-X. Be sure to record the wiper blade change in your vehicle's service records. Please check out all of my
