This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the third generation (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 plus possibly also the 2019 and 2020 model years) Toyota Highlander SUV in changing a burnt out vanity mirror light bulb located in the sun visor.

Owners of other Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles such as the 4Runner, Avalon, 86, C-HR, Camry, Corolla, iM, Land Cruiser, Mirai, Prius, RAV4, Sequoia, Sienna, Tacoma, Tundra, Yaris, FR-S, xB,  xD, tC, xA, CT 200h, ES 250, ES 300, ES 330, ES 350, IS 250, IS 350, RX 300, GS 250, NX 300 and RX 350.

The compatible replacement sub miniature light bulb part number is 74 (also known as part # 2723).

If you want brighter vanity mirror lights, install some 74 LED or 2723 LED bulbs.

The tools needed to access and replace the light bulb include a small flathead screwdriver or a plastic pry bar tool and possibly also a pair of needle nose pliers.

Needle Nose Pliers
To prevent from scratching the plastic surfaces, you can choose to either cover the tip of your screwdriver with a thin micro fiber cloth or instead use a plastic pry bar tool.

Insert the blade of your flathead screwdriver into the small notch on the outer edge of the lens cover (farthest from the mirror).

Gently pry out the lens cover and remove the two plastic tabs on the inner edge from the light housing.

Set the lens cover aside in a safe place.

I wasn't able to remove the old light bulb with my fingers. To make it easier to get a grip on the bulb, I covered the two tips of my needle nose pliers with a few layers of painter's tape.

Very gently grasp the old light bulb with the needle nose pliers and pull it straight out of the socket.

The OEM light bulb was marked as part number TSD 14V26W 68. It is a sub miniature wedge base light bulb.

Re-insert the two tabs on the inner edge in first.

Then gently snap the outer edge of the lens cover back into place to secure the retaining clips.

Double check that the lens cover is flush with the vanity mirror housing.

If the new light bulb didn't turn as soon as you pushed it into the socket, test it by opening and closing the mirror cover.

Or you may need to press the "Unlock" button on the key fob to re-activate the interior lights.

Be sure to record the bulb change in your vehicle's service records.
