This
automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist
owners of the second generation 2014, 2015, 2016 and the updated
2017 or 2018 model year Nissan Rogue SUV in changing the motor oil
and replacing the oil filter on the QR25DE 2.5 liter inline four
cylinder engine. Owners of other Nissan or Infiniti vehicles such as the Murano, Altima, Titan, Versa, Sentra, Maxima, Leaf, 370Z, GT-R, Juke, Pathfinder, Armada, Patrol, Skyline, Cube, X-Trail, Xterra, Qashqai, Rogue Sport, NV200, NV400, Teana, Q50, Q70, Q60, QX30, QX50, QX56, QX60, QX70 and QX80 may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful. A few compatible replacement oil filters with their part numbers are as follows: Mobil 1 M1-108, Fram XG6607, K&N PS-1008, Royal Purple 10-2876, Wix 51358, Pennzoil HPZ-37, ACDelco PF1237, Nissan 15208-65F0E & Purolator L14612. The tools and other items needed to complete this procedure include a 14mm socket, a 3/8" drive ratchet, a used oil catch basin, a Lisle 63600 oil filter wrench (optional), an automotive funnel, a new oil filter and 4 7/8 U.S. quarts (4.6L) of new SAE 0W-20 or 5W-30 oil. |

Turn Steering Wheel Right |
Black Metal Oil Pan |
Drain Bolt Rear Edge |
The first two steps
are to warm up the engine for a few minutes and then park the vehicle on a
level surface. Warming up the engine will help suspend any contaminants within the old oil and also allow it to drain out more quickly. Engage the emergency / parking brake and place wheel chocks on both sides of the front and/or rear wheels to prevent the SUV from moving. Open the hood to access the engine bay. Twist off the oil filler cap in the counterclockwise direction and lift up the dipstick an inch or two. Set the oil filler cap aside in a safe place. Removing the oil filler cap and lifting the dipstick out a bit will help prevent a vacuum from forming and allow the old oil to dran out more quickly. The oil filter is located on the passenger side of the engine bay behind the black plastic wheel well liner near the front passenger side tire. Rotate the steering wheel all the way to the right in order to make more room in the wheel well. Slide under the front passenger side of the engine bay with the 14mm socket, a 3/8" drive ratchet and the used oil catch basin. |

Black Metal Oil Drain Bolt |
Used Oil Catch Container |
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Locate the black
metal oil pan.
The black metal oil drain bolt is situated on the rear edge of the oil pan with the bolt head facing towards the back of the SUV. Slide the used oil catch container to just below the oil drain bolt. Loosen the oil drain bolt in the counterclockwise direction with the 14mm socket and the 3/8" drive ratchet. Be careful when you remove the oil drain bolt. The old oil might still be hot enough to burn your fingers. |
||
Drain Out Old Oil |
Tighten Oil Drain Bolt |
Plastic Wheel Well Liner |
Allow the old oil
to drain out for at least a few minutes or until the flow slows down to just
an occasional drip.
If the oil drain bolt is equipped with a washer, inspect it and replace it if necessary. Re-insert the oil drain bolt and spin it in a few turns by hand in the clockwise direction to prevent it from becoming cross threaded. Tighten the oil drain bolt to just past hand tight or about 25 lb-ft of torque. Double check that the oil drain bolt is tight before moving on to the next steps. Move to the front passenger wheel well. |
||
Passenger Side of Engine |
Lift To Expose Oil Filter |
Oil Filter Wrench & Ratchet |
To access the oil
filter location, you can either remove the plastic pop rivet fasteners on
the wheel well liner or just lift up the panel. To remove the pop rivets, first pry up the center of the fastener before pulling out the base. I chose to just gently lift up the splash guard to access the oil filter. An optional tool that I highly recommend is the Lisle 63600 oil filter wrench. It makes removing stubborn old oil filters much easier. |

|
||
Loosen Counterclockwise |
Dip Finger In New Oil |
Lubricate Rubber O-Ring |
Slide the used oil
catch container to just below the old oil filter. Twist off the old oil filter in the counterclockwise direction. If you have trouble loosening the old oil filter, use the oil filter wrench attached to a short extension bar and a 3/8" drive ratchet. Allow the old oil to drain out of the oil filter receptacle for at least a few minutes. I recommend buying the Mobil 1 M1-108 oil filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon. Dip your pinky finger in to some new SAE 0W-20 or 5W-30 oil and lubricate the rubber o-ring gasket on the new oil filter. Lubricating the new oil filter gasket will help it form a better seal, prevent oil leaks and also make the filter easier to take off during the next oil change. |
||
Twist On New Oil Filter |
Lower Splash Guard |
Insert Automotive Funnel |
Make sure the
rubber o-ring from the old oil filter is not still attached to the engine. Twist on the new oil filter in the clockwise direction until it is snug or about 1/4 to 1/2 turn past hand tight (approximately 11 to 15 lb-ft of torque). Lower the wheel well liner back in to place or re-install it with the pop rivet fasteners. Insert the automotive funnel in to the oil filler hole. |
||
Pour In New Oil |
Twist On Oil Filler Cap |
Push Down Oil Dipstick |
The QR25DE 2.5L I4
engine's total oil capacity specification for an oil change with a filter
replacement is 4 7/8 U.S. quarts (4.6L). The owner's manual specifies using either SAE 0W-20 or SAE 5W-30 is also acceptable. Buying a 5 quart jug is the most economical choice. Running an engine that has been overfilled with oil can lead to sluggish performance and even damage to seals, gaskets or other components. So I recommend only pouring in about 4 to 4/12 quarts of new oil in to the engine at first. |
||
Check Oil Level |
Replace Dipstick |
Oil Change Complete |
Then temporarily replace the oil filler cap by twisting it on in the clockwise direction and push down the dipstick. Start the engine and allow it to warm up for a few minutes, turn off the ignition and allow the new oil to drain down to the oil pan for at least 5 to 10 minutes. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean with a paper towel, fully re-insert it and then pull it out again to check the oil level. If necessary, slowly pour in more oil and repeatedly check the level on the dipstick until it reaches just at or below the upper hole in the dipstick that indicates the "Full" or "Max" (maximum) line. Once the oil level is correct, re-insert the oil dipstick and tighten the oil filler cap. Don't forget to record the oil
change in your SUV's service records. For more, check out all of my
