This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the third generation (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018) Mazda Mazda6 sedan in cleaning or changing the engine air filter element for the SKYACTIV-G DOHC 16V VVT 2.5 liter inline four cylinder motor.

Owners of other Mazda vehicles such as the Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda5, CX-3, CX-5, CX-7, CX-9, and the MX-5 Miata may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

A few compatible replacement filters with their part numbers are as follows: Mazda PE07-13-3A0A, Ecogard XA6280, Fram CA11259, Cleenaire EAF11712, AEM 28-20480, F1AUTO FA6280, Wix 49247, Beck Arnley 042-1831, Mahle LX3497, Purolator A26280 and Hastings AF1548.

No tools are required to access and replace the engine filter.

Lift Up Air Box Cover
The first two steps are to open the hood and then move to the right (driver) side of the engine bay.

The black plastic engine air filter box is located behind the driver side headlight housing and in front of the 12V automotive battery.

There are two metal latches on the front edge of the air box assembly with one on the left side and the other on the right side.

Flip the metal latches down and off the air box cover to release it.

Lift the top half of the air box to reveal the old filter.

Inspect Both Sides
Pull the old filter out of the bottom half of the air box.

Inspect both sides of the old air filter.

If the old filter is dark grey or black and clogged with dirt, dust, pollen, soot, insects, leaves, twigs, hair and other debris, it should be replaced with a new element.

I recommend buying the OEM Mazda PE07-13-3A0A engine air filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon.

If the old filter is relatively clean, just tap out the large debris and remove any fine dust with a vacuum cleaner.

Lower In New Air Filter
If your vacuum cleaner has a crevice attachment, clean out any sand or debris in the bottom half of the air box.

Lower the new air filter in to the bottom half of the air box with the pleats facing down and the rubber gasket facing up towards you.

Engine Filter Replaced
Flip up the two metal latches and push them back in to place over the top half of the air box.

Double check that the two halves of the air box are flush together at every edge with no part of the new filter visible.

Be sure to record the engine air filter change in your car's service records.
